What is the difference between thinking things over and overthinking?

Writer's picture: Sarah BridgeSarah Bridge

Have you ever had a thought that keeps resurfacing and overshadowing other things? I have had many clients who have told me that they believe they are 'overthinking' an issue, challenge or decision. This has often been said somewhat apologetically, with the concern that it's a sign of ineffectiveness or lack of decisiveness. It's true that overthinking can lead to anxiety if the same thought keeps replaying without a chance to work through it and come out the other side. However, thinking things over can lead to clarity, curiosity, authenticity and empathy. Taking the time to consider different possibilities and perspectives, to work through thought process reflectively and to wheedle out all the barriers and find the solution, are some of the many benefits of coaching.
